Fatal Drain Accident in Matamoros, Mexico Claims One Life, Injures Rescuer

On the afternoon of July 26, two workers were hired by neighborhood residents to clear a blocked drainage pipe on Laguna de Catemaco Street in the Las Brisas subdivision of Matamoros, Tamaulipas. The first worker, known locally as “El Güero,” entered the collapsed pipe and quickly lost consciousness due to lack of oxygen. His colleague, 48‑year‑old Paulino “S,” went in to try to rescue him and also collapsed.

Neighbors noticed the incident, pulled Paulino out of the pipe and rushed him to Hospital General “Alfredo Pumarejo” in serious condition. When authorities arrived, they confirmed that “El Güero” was dead and waited for the forensic team to retrieve the body. Preliminary findings indicate the drainage system had been obstructed for days and municipal response had been lacking, prompting residents to hire the two men for the cleaning job, which led to the tragedy. The state prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation.
