France: Suspect in Trappes racist attack placed under psychiatric observation

The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) has suspended the police custody of Kévin T., the 39-year-old suspect accused of a racist terrorist attack in the Yvelines region. Following a psychiatric evaluation, the suspect was transferred to the psychiatric infirmary of the Paris Police Prefecture for a 48-hour observation period to determine if his mental health allows for continued interrogation.

The attack, which occurred on Friday, October 23, involved the suspect firing a submachine gun from a vehicle in Trappes and La Verrière. The incident resulted in the death of 26-year-old Pengo Bossio Wangi and left five others injured, including a 12-year-old girl who was struck by eight bullets. Authorities noted that the suspect reportedly targeted individuals based on their perceived race or origin.

Investigations revealed that the suspect had cannabis and cocaine in his blood. At his residence in Plaisir, police discovered a Sten submachine gun, tear gas canisters, and a device consisting of gas canisters and a timer rigged to explode. A copy of “Mein Kampf” was also found at his home. While the suspect's custody is suspended, the detention of four members of his social and family circle, including his parents, remains in effect.
