Shootings involving automatic weapons in France

Overview

In late September 2026, a shooting at a restaurant terrace in Vénissieux, near Lyon, resulted in three injuries, including one 18-year-old woman in critical condition. Investigators recovered approximately twenty shell casings and noted the assailant used an automatic or long firearm before fleeing on an electric scooter. The Lyon prosecutor's office opened an investigation into attempted willful homicide by an organized group. In October 2026, a separate incident occurred in the Yvelines department near Paris, specifically in Trappes and La Verrière. On the morning of October 23, an assailant using an automatic weapon fired from a vehicle at pedestrians and various locations, including a playground, a gas station, and a health center. The attack left one person dead, identified as 26-year-old Pengo Bossio Wangi, a mixed martial arts practitioner, and five others injured, including a 12-year-old girl who was hit by eight bullets. A 39-year-old suspect, Kevin T., was apprehended in Coignières. Investigators recovered a Sten submachine gun and tear gas canisters from his vehicle. At his residence in Plaisir, police discovered a booby-trap device consisting of three gas canisters connected to a timer via electrical wires, a copy of “Mein Kampf,” a Bible, a Coran, and documents linked to the Rassemblement National. Toxicology reports revealed the presence of cannabis and cocaine in the suspect's blood. President Emmanuel Macron and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez characterized the incident as a “terrorist and racist attack” targeting individuals of African and North African descent. Following a psychiatric evaluation, the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) suspended Kevin T.’s police custody, transferring him to a psychiatric infirmary for a 48-hour observation period. While his custody is suspended, the detention of four members of his social and family circle, including his parents, remains in effect.
