Morocco appoints Fatima Zahra Mansouri as first female Prime Minister FAST-MOVING

King Mohammed VI has appointed Fatima Zahra Mansouri as Morocco's first female Prime Minister. The 50-year-old attorney and former urban planning minister, who also served as the mayor of Marrakech, was tasked with forming a new government following the September 23 legislative elections.

Mansouri's party, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), secured 97 seats in the 395-seat House of Representatives, the highest number among all competing parties. However, because a parliamentary majority requires at least 198 seats, Mansouri must now engage in consultations to build a governing coalition. While PAM has expressed a willingness to work with various political factions, the Justice and Development Party (PJD) and the Federation of Democratic Left have indicated they will remain in the opposition.

This appointment makes Mansouri the second woman in the Arab world to hold the position of Prime Minister, following Tunisia's Najla Bouden. Her administration faces significant responsibilities, including managing economic challenges such as unemployment and inflation, and overseeing major infrastructure investments in preparation for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
