Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya resigns amid Turkish fund manipulation scandal

Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya, the Vice President of Turkey's ruling AKP party and former Family Minister, has resigned following allegations of stock market manipulation and insider trading. The scandal involves suspected fraudulent activities within investment funds that have reportedly affected approximately 500,000 small investors.

Turkish authorities have suspended 131 investment funds, valued at roughly 17 billion euros, amid suspicions of market manipulation. The Istanbul Prosecutor's Office has initiated legal proceedings against 76 individuals, and more than 50 fund managers and businesspeople have been detained. Justice Minister Akin Gürlek has compared the situation to a pyramid scheme.

Allegations suggest that Kaya and her husband, İlyas Kaya, engaged in suspicious transactions involving Özata Denizcilik shares. Reports indicate they may have invested in the company before a market downturn and subsequently realized significant profits. Specifically, some reports claim Kaya realized approximately 27.5 million dollars from stock sales shortly before a major market decline. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has stated that those involved in activities that harm the nation's wealth will be held accountable under the law.
