Fatty Liver Disease: Lifestyle and Diet Strategies to Reverse It
Fatty liver disease, now often termed Metabolic Dysfunction‑Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), is increasingly common and linked to obesity, insulin resistance, type‑2 diabetes, high triglycerides and excessive intake of sugar and refined carbs. Early‑stage disease can be improved through sustainable lifestyle changes rather than quick‑fix detoxes.
Key recommendations include gradual weight loss of about 7‑10 % of body weight, adopting a Mediterranean‑style diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, nuts, fish and fiber, limiting added sugars, sugary drinks and processed foods, and reducing alcohol intake. Moderate coffee consumption (black, without sugar or cream) may lower risk by up to 35 %. Regular physical activity—at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise per week combined with strength training—helps the liver burn stored fat. Adequate hydration and consistent sleep also support liver health.
