FBI intelligence operations involving al-Qaeda associates revealed

Newly disclosed documents and investigations have revealed significant details regarding the FBI’s historical interactions with individuals linked to al-Qaeda.

US Military Commission files from Guantanamo Bay show that the FBI secretly recruited Jack Roche, one of Australia’s first convicted terrorists, and paid him more than $561,000 USD. Roche, who was jailed in 2004 for plotting to attack the Israeli Embassy in Canberra, underwent up to 10 interviews with the FBI regarding his connections to Osama Bin Laden, Khaled Sheikh Mohammed, and Hambali. These interviews continued for a decade, including after his release from prison in 2007.

Separately, evidence seized during a British police raid in 2001 is challenging the FBI’s long-standing position that Omar al-Bayoumi’s assistance to 9/11 hijackers in San Diego was a coincidence. While FBI leadership previously maintained that Bayoumi, a Saudi student, met the hijackers by chance, newly surfaced materials—including a handwritten diagram of an aircraft trajectory and records of his contacts with Saudi religious officials—suggest deeper ties to al-Qaeda figures.
