Real Madrid shows interest in NBA Europe project amid club divergence
Major European basketball clubs are showing divided responses to a potential NBA-led expansion in Europe. During a scheduled meeting in London to discuss the 'NBA Europe' project, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich declined to attend, signaling caution regarding the initiative.
Reports indicate that the NBA's proposal involves a potential €520 million offer to EuroLeague shareholders to dissolve the current competition in favor of the new project. This would result in approximately €40 million per club, though participants would lose ownership of the league and face a significant €400 million entry fee. Such terms would require clubs to generate substantial annual revenue just to recoup their initial investments.
In contrast to the stance taken by Barcelona and Bayern, Real Madrid has expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue and explore the details of the initiative. The divergence highlights ongoing tensions regarding the future structure of European basketball, including how a new league would integrate with existing national leagues and the EuroLeague.
