FC Girondins de Bordeaux relegated to French sixth tier

FC Girondins de Bordeaux, a historic six-time French champion, has been relegated to Régional 1, the sixth tier of French football. The decision was confirmed by a Paris administrative court following severe financial difficulties.

The club's decline accelerated after the 2021–22 season. Following bankruptcy proceedings in 2024, the club lost its professional status and was relegated to Championnat National 2. An attempt to stabilize the club in 2026 through a €10 million investment from British firm Sparta Capital failed after the French football financial watchdog, DNCG, ruled that required financial guarantees were not provided on time.

The court upheld the DNCG's decision, stating the football federation had not acted incorrectly by disregarding later funding commitments. While the club's exact start date in the sixth tier remains uncertain due to recent cabinet decisions, Bordeaux maintains a loyal fanbase despite its fall from the top flight and Champions League competition.
