Lucian Pahonțu denies involvement in 1989 and 1990 repression allegations

Lucian Pahonțu, head of the Protection and Guard Service (SPP), has issued a formal response to allegations regarding his involvement in the repression of protesters during the 1989 Revolution and the June 1990 Mineriad. Pahonțu denies all accusations of political policing or violating fundamental rights, describing the claims as baseless and harmful to his military dignity.

An investigation by the publication Recorder alleges that Pahonțu's version of events is contradicted by archive documents and testimonies from former colleagues. Specifically, while Pahonțu maintains that his unit remained in barracks during the June 1990 events, three former subordinates have reportedly testified to military prosecutors that they participated in the events in Bucharest while under his command. Additionally, a former colleague, Radu Grigoraș, testified that Pahonțu was active in the University area during that period.

Regarding the December 1989 Revolution, Pahonțu asserts his unit was positioned approximately 100 meters from the Intercontinental Hotel barricade and had no direct contact with revolutionaries. He further claims his soldiers did not carry ammunition during these deployments. The National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives (CNSAS) has initiated checks to clarify his status regarding the former Securitate.
