FDA and Toy Association warn of hazardous counterfeit squishy toys

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and The Toy Association have issued warnings regarding the safety of squishy toys, particularly counterfeit or non-compliant versions. Authorities have raised concerns about certain products containing elevated levels of chemicals, such as benzene, or possessing oily, sticky, or leaky surfaces.

The Toy Association, marking its sixth annual Toy Safety Awareness Month, noted an influx of dangerous knockoff squishies that do not comply with safety laws. These counterfeit items may tear or burst, releasing small parts or fillings that pose choking hazards, or expose children to prohibited chemicals.

In the Philippines, the FDA Mindanao East Cluster confirmed that counterfeit squishies are on the market, though no specific reports of toxicity or choking incidents have been filed to date. Consumers are advised to inspect packaging for FDA notification numbers, age limits, and safety labels, and to avoid suspiciously low prices from unidentified sellers.
