FDA declares end to multistate Cyclospora outbreak

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have declared the 2026 multistate Cyclospora outbreak over. The outbreak, linked to shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from Taylor Farms de Mexico, resulted in 12,883 reported illnesses across 21 states, including Virginia. The outbreak caused 570 hospitalizations and two deaths.

While the outbreak has concluded, the FDA continues its investigation into the infections. The Controlled Environment Agriculture Alliance (CEA Alliance) has responded to the news, noting that the outbreak had a devastating impact on consumer confidence in fresh produce. The CEA Alliance emphasized that highly controlled indoor-grown salad products were never suspected as the source, highlighting the differences in safety controls between indoor farming and traditional outdoor growing systems.
