Midwest Poultry Services egg recall upgraded to Class I risk level
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has upgraded a recall of approximately 1.59 million dozen cage-free eggs from Midwest Poultry Services to Class I, the agency’s highest risk level. This designation indicates a reasonable probability that the product could cause serious health consequences or death due to potential Salmonella contamination.
The outbreak has been linked to 98 illnesses across 17 states, with at least 26 hospitalizations reported. No deaths have been confirmed. Texas has recorded the highest number of cases. The affected eggs, which include both white and brown shells, were produced at Texas farms between June 6 and July 3, 2026, and carry best-by dates ranging from July 20 to August 17, 2026.
Retailers carrying the affected products include Kroger and Brookshire’s. Midwest Poultry Services initiated the voluntary recall after its own environmental monitoring identified the issue. While the FDA is investigating further sources of the outbreak, the agency has identified the recalled eggs as a likely source.
