Midwest Poultry egg recall
Entities: Salmonella Enteritidis · U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) · Kroger · Brookshire Grocery Company · Midwest Poultry Services, L.P.
Overview
In late July 2026 the FDA issued a voluntary recall of about 1.6 million dozen eggs (≈19 million eggs) produced by Midwest Poultry Services at two Texas farms. The recall covers white‑shell and cage‑free brown eggs sold under private‑label brands such as Kroger, Simple Truth, Brookshire’s, Country Morning and Sunups. Affected cartons bear plant codes P‑1950 or 0840962, Julian dates 157–184 and sell‑by dates from July 20 to August 17, 2026, and were distributed through grocery and food‑service outlets in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi and New Mexico.
Testing identified Salmonella Enteritidis; genetic sequencing linked the strain to a multistate outbreak that has sickened 98 people in 17 states, resulting in 26 hospitalizations and no deaths. The outbreak originated in November 2025 and persisted through June 2026, with most cases in Texas and additional cases reported in Louisiana, Arizona, Oklahoma and New Mexico. As of the July 27 report, CDC officials note the recalled product may not account for all cases.
Midwest Poultry Services has expanded the recall to additional outlets, suspended shipments from the implicated farms, and is implementing corrective actions. The FDA urges consumers to discard or return any recalled eggs, avoid consumption even if cooked, and clean contacted surfaces. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials continue monitoring for further cases.
