Distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors, the peppers have been linked to Salmonella Javiana, causing 431 illnesses and 57 hospitalizations across 32 states. The outbreak is heavily associated with Mexican-style restaurants, with 91% of interviewed patients reporting dining at such establishments. Major chains, including Chipotle and QDOBA, have stopped using the implicated peppers.

Recalls continue to expand to include various derivative products such as salsa, guacamole, pico de gallo, salads, burritos, and sandwiches. Taylor Fresh Foods has recalled multiple items, including Private Selection Spicy Roast Beef Sandwiches, and has stated it will no longer source from the implicated grower. While Mexico’s Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) investigated a packaging facility in Nuevo León, testing of raw materials and finished products returned negative results, ruling out that specific facility as the source.
