FDNY report details long-term health impacts of 9/11
The FDNY has released a landmark report detailing the long-term health consequences for those involved in the September 11 rescue and recovery efforts. Nearly 25 years after the attacks, the World Trade Center Health Program reports that more than 9,000 people have died from illnesses linked to the event and its aftermath, a figure that now exceeds the number of people killed during the initial attacks.
Within the FDNY specifically, more than 10,000 members are currently living with at least one 9/11-related illness, and over 600 members have died in the decades since the attacks. Of the approximately 16,000 members enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Program, 4,257 have been diagnosed with at least one cancer, with 26% having suffered from multiple cancers.
Despite these figures, officials noted that aggressive monitoring and early intervention have improved survival rates. The department reported that 86% of members diagnosed with cancer are still alive five years after their diagnosis. The report highlights the ongoing impact of toxic dust and debris exposure on first responders, officers, and civilians.
