WTC: 25 years of victim identification and health impacts

Overview

Twenty-five years after the September 11 attacks, the long-term health crisis and forensic identification efforts continue to evolve. While over 1,600 people have been identified via bone fragments, more than 1,000 victims—approximately 40 percent of those killed in New York City—remain unidentified due to extreme fragmentation and DNA damage caused by the collapse and subsequent fires. The human toll remains significant. A total of 72 law enforcement officers perished during the events. Regarding long-term health, more than 350 deaths have been attributed to 9/11-related illnesses. Many survivors experience multimorbidity, including cancer, respiratory diseases, and mental health disorders. Research indicates these chronic conditions often emerge years after the initial exposure to toxic dust, such as pulverized concrete and glass, necessitating sustained clinical monitoring. Previously, data from the WTC Health Program showed cancer cases among local residents and workers reaching 28,913, surpassing the 28,131 cases recorded among responders. The CDC reported that 67 percent of the 145,000 members in the WTC Health Program had at least one confirmed cancer type linked to the toxic substances present after the attacks. Recent updates indicate the death toll from service-related diseases continues to rise, with over 600 firefighters having died from illnesses connected to their service at Ground Zero. New scientific concerns have emerged regarding the long-term health of children who lived in or attended school in Lower Manhattan during the attacks. Approximately 25,000 children were exposed to a toxic cloud containing pollutants such as asbestos and fiberglass. Because early studies focused primarily on adult responders, many children were not enrolled, complicating the tracking of chronic conditions like cardiovascular and reproductive health issues. In response to this, the U.S. Congress announced funding in 2022 for a dedicated CDC-overseen study to establish a World Trade Center Youth Research Coordinating Center and a Youth Study Cohort.
