Fed Chair Kevin Warsh warns of high inflation at Jackson Hole
Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh addressed the annual Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium, warning that inflation remains stubbornly above the central bank’s 2% target. Warsh emphasized that the Fed must focus on reducing sustained elevated inflation and expressed a desire for a ‘quieter’ central bank.
Warsh signaled a strategic shift by proposing to change the form and function of ‘forward guidance.’ He argued that the practice of communicating future policy moves has ‘outstayed its welcome,’ noting that overcommitting to future decisions can create market ambiguity and a ‘hall of mirrors problem.’ He suggested that the role of forward guidance should be limited and circumscribed during normal economic times to maintain policy flexibility.
Following his remarks, financial markets reacted, with the two-year Treasury yield rising from 4.22% to 4.30%. Analysts described the address as deliberately hawkish, reinforcing the central bank’s commitment to restoring price stability even if it requires higher borrowing costs.
