Fed Guidance Split, June CPI Drop & Rate‑Hike Odds Shift
Overview
The Federal Reserve remains divided over forward guidance as Chair Kevin Warsh prepares for his first congressional testimony on July 14‑15. The Monetary Policy Report released on July 10 reiterated a steady policy rate of 3.5‑3.75 % and the 2 % inflation target, while markets now price a 16 % chance of a 25‑basis‑point hike at the October meeting.
June 2026 CPI data showed a headline rise of 3.5 % YoY, the first annual slowdown since 2020, driven by a 9.7 % fall in gasoline and a 5.7 % drop in energy prices. Core CPI eased to 2.6 % YoY, keeping inflation near the Fed’s 2‑3 % watch range. The monthly CPI declined 0.4 %, the largest dip in six years, prompting traders to slash the probability of a September hike to below 17 % and the overall near‑term hike outlook to roughly 50‑51 % for September.
Fed Governor Christopher Waller reiterated that persistently high core inflation could force a near‑term increase and floated a broader 1.5‑2.5 % target range. Markets, however, reacted positively on Wall Street, with modest gains in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, while oil prices rose above $86 a barrel as the United States reinstated a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, reviving Persian Gulf tension.
In Taiwan, TSMC delayed its June revenue release to July 13 and will report Q2 results on July 16, where analysts will watch for AI‑related demand guidance.
