Federacciai leads Italian steel consortium bid for ex-Ilva plants

Italian steel companies, coordinated by Federacciai, are forming a consortium to bid for the ex-Ilva plants in Taranto. Federacciai President Antonio Gozzi has been mandated to submit a manifestation of interest for assets not affected by the recent court-ordered shutdown of the plant's 'hot area.' The proposed consortium includes major players such as Arvedi, Marcegaglia, Feralpi, Duferco, Beltrame, and Lucchini.

The industrial initiative is contingent upon several enabling conditions to be verified with the Italian government. The group aims to focus on downstream processes, such as hot rolling mills, rather than blast furnaces. This move follows the Milan Court of Appeal's decision to halt production in the hot area, a ruling that Acciaierie d'Italia (AdI) is currently challenging in the Supreme Court.

The shutdown has triggered a severe economic and social crisis in Taranto. Local supply chain associations, organized under the 'Tavolo Permanente per Taranto,' have announced they are preparing for collective redundancies as the loss of orders from the main plant threatens the survival of service, logistics, and maintenance companies. In response, Minister of Enterprises Adolfo Urso has proposed an extraordinary plan for the region to mitigate the social and productive impact.
