Federal fraud cases result in prison and probation sentences

A former chief medical officer at New London Hospital in New Hampshire, Dr. Steven Powell, has been sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison for Medicare fraud. Between December 2018 and March 2019, Powell signed orders for medical braces for more than 500 Medicare beneficiaries without ever examining or speaking to them. The scheme involved approximately 1,400 claims totaling over $1.9 million, of which Medicare paid $761,202. Under his plea agreement, Powell must also repay $761,202.75 to Medicare.

In a separate case, former New York City Department of Correction officer Jovanny Concepcion was sentenced to two years of probation and eight months of home detention. Concepcion admitted to lying about on-the-job injuries sustained at Rikers Island to obtain more than $200,000 in fraudulent workers’ compensation payments. He has agreed to pay $232,427 in forfeiture and restitution.
