Federal grants target rural healthcare workforce development
Federal funding through the Rural Health Transformation Program (RHTP) has allocated $4 billion of a planned $10 billion for the program's first year. An analysis by the RHT Alliance indicates that workforce initiatives across 34 states have received the largest share of these funds, totaling $651 million.
Specific allocations include $65.7 million for California to support workforce capacity, retention, and relocation. Other major funding categories include $566 million for care availability, $481 million for prevention and chronic disease initiatives, and $476 million for IT advancements.
In Arizona, Northern Arizona University (NAU) has been awarded over $6.35 million from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). These two five-year awards aim to train healthcare workers for rural, Tribal, and medically underserved communities. The Department of Physician Assistant Studies received $3.1 million for the Community Access and Rural Expansion (CARE-PA) initiative, while the Department of Occupational Therapy received $3.25 million to provide scholarships and support for students serving vulnerable populations.
