Nasir El-Rufai's suit to block asset freezing dismissed by court
A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a lawsuit filed by Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, which sought to prevent the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and other agencies from freezing his bank accounts or seizing his assets.
Presiding Judge Joyce Abdulmalik ruled that the suit constituted an abuse of judicial process, noting that El-Rufai had initiated multiple similar legal actions across different courts, creating a risk of conflicting judgments. The court described the application as speculative and lacking merit.
El-Rufai had argued that his severance benefits from his 2015–2023 tenure were legitimate funds and that properties acquired with them were lawfully obtained. The court struck the names of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) from the proceedings, finding no reasonable cause of action against them.
