Legal proceedings and detention of Nasir El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is facing significant legal challenges and public scrutiny regarding his detention. He is currently subject to two separate legal processes: a nine-count charge from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission involving allegations of fraud, money laundering, and abuse of office, and a five-count charge from the State Security Service concerning the alleged unlawful recording of telephone conversations involving National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. As his detention has approached 200 days, various groups have responded to his situation. Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, accused El-Rufai of persecuting Christian communities and denying development projects to Southern Kaduna during his eight-year tenure. In September 2026, El-Rufai’s legal counsel, Ubong Akpan, threatened legal action against the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, following alleged defamatory remarks made during a television interview. The legal team claims the Minister falsely characterized El-Rufai as a ‘criminal and a murderer’ who planned killings, divided Kaduna State along ethnic lines, and paid ransoms to bandits. El-Rufai has demanded an unreserved apology, a retraction, and N10 billion in compensation. Following a September 3 interview in which Musa accused El-Rufai of planning killings in Southern Kaduna and using power to victimize opponents through property demolitions, El-Rufai’s legal team issued a seven-day ultimatum for a retraction.
