DB Regio reports 989 assaults on railway staff in first half of year

DB Regio has reported a significant rise in assaults against railway staff in German regional trains. During the first half of the year, 989 incidents were recorded, representing a 14 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Of these incidents, 781 were classified as simple assault, 185 as attempted assault, and 22 resulted in serious injury. The company noted the tragic death of a conductor during a ticket inspection in February as a particularly severe event.

In response, DB Regio is launching a pilot program in the Rhein-Neckar-Pfalz region starting October 1. The trial will test the use of bodycams equipped with audio recording capabilities to assist in de-escalation and the prosecution of crimes. Additional security measures being implemented include increased personnel presence, the use of puncture-resistant vests and helmets, and the deployment of security staff to accompany customer service representatives.
