Deutsche Bahn security and staff safety measures

Overview

Deutsche Bahn is implementing new security measures following a rise in violence against its employees. In the first half of 2026, DB Regio reported 989 assaults on staff, a 14 percent increase from the previous year. These incidents included 781 cases of simple assault, 185 attempted assaults, and 22 cases of serious assault, as well as the death of a conductor.

To address these safety concerns, the company announced a nationwide ban on alcohol consumption at approximately 5,400 railway stations, effective 15 October 2026. This ban excludes bars and restaurants and does not apply to onboard trains. Deutsche Bahn chief Evelyn Palla stated the measure “significantly reduces conflict and improves safety.” Building on these efforts, Deutsche Bahn is expanding the use of bodycams to station service and station management staff. Approximately 2,700 employees will have the voluntary option to wear the cameras as part of their personal protective equipment, with initial deployment already underway at major stations in Frankfurt am Main and Bielefeld. This follows the equipping of approximately 2,000 long-distance employees and 1,400 regional train conductors.

Additional security responses include the use of puncture-resistant vests and helmets for mobile teams, larger inspection groups of six to eight employees, and a pilot program for audio-enabled bodycams starting on 1 October 2026 in the Rhein-Neckar-Pfalz region. DB Regio CEO Harmen van Zijderveld noted that audio recording is intended to “aid in de-escalation and the prosecution of crimes.”

In a related legal development, the Karlsruhe District Court recently rejected a prosecutor's request for pretrial detention for a passenger involved in a July incident near Ettlingen. During that altercation, a railway security employee fell from a regional train traveling at 120 km/h and sustained severe injuries. The court cited doubts regarding the exact sequence of events shown in surveillance footage.
