Federal Prosecutors Investigate Lagoa Vermelha Breach in Rio de Janeiro

The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) has ordered an investigation into the opening of a channel at Praia do Foguete, which connected the Lagoa Vermelha to the Atlantic Ocean between Cabo Frio and Arraial do Cabo.

The breach, which occurred in mid-October following heavy rains in the Lakes Region, caused the lagoon to lose significant water volume and its distinctive reddish color as the water flowed into the sea. The State Environmental Institute (Inea) is currently investigating whether the rupture was a natural phenomenon caused by water pressure from intense rainfall or the result of human intervention.

While Inea noted that the sandbar separating the lagoon from the sea has been restored, the MPF is seeking to identify if any prior extrajudicial proceedings exist regarding the incident. If none are found, a formal inquiry will be opened to evaluate potential environmental damages and determine responsibility.
