Lagoa Vermelha breach investigation in Rio de Janeiro
Overview
Authorities in Rio de Janeiro have launched investigations into the opening of a channel connecting Lagoa Vermelha to the Atlantic Ocean at Praia do Foguete, located between Cabo Frio and Arraial do Cabo.
Initial inquiries by the State Environmental Institute (Inea) and local municipalities sought to determine if the breach was an artificial intervention by beachgoers or a natural occurrence. Local officials expressed concern that unauthorized excavation could threaten local flora and fauna by altering salinity levels and drainage. While some individuals identified in social media footage denied responsibility, citing heavy rainfall as the cause, Inea noted that no formal authorization had been requested for soil movement in the area.
Following the incident, the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) ordered its own investigation. The breach resulted in a significant loss of water volume and the disappearance of the lagoon’s distinctive reddish color as water flowed into the sea. While the sandbar separating the lagoon from the ocean has since been restored, the MPF is evaluating potential environmental damages and working to determine whether the rupture was a natural phenomenon caused by intense rainfall or the result of human activity.
