Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh implements policy shifts
Newly appointed Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is implementing significant shifts in monetary policy and organizational structure. Warsh has established five task forces, expected to report in 2027, to review balance sheet policy, inflation forecasting, and communications. A primary objective includes substantially shrinking the Fed’s balance sheet to recenter policy on interest rates and avoid the appearance of monetizing fiscal policy. Additionally, Warsh has moved away from “forward guidance,” opting instead to react to incoming data rather than providing frameworks for future actions.
Questions regarding the relationship between President Donald Trump and Chairman Warsh have also emerged following reports of frequent communication. While some reports suggested repeated contact since Warsh’s appointment in May, President Trump has disputed these claims, stating he has only spoken with Warsh briefly once in recent days. Trump has publicly praised Warsh’s intelligence while noting his preference for lower interest rates, though he acknowledged that the Fed operates through a board. Warsh was nominated by Trump in March 2026 and is serving a term that concludes in May 2030.
