Federal Reserve hike odds climb, pressuring U.S. stock market
The CME Group's FedWatch Tool shows a sharp rise in the probability of a Federal Reserve rate increase, with a 36% chance of a hike by the next meeting in late July, a 70% chance by September, an 86% chance by December and a 90% chance by March 2027. The surge follows the appointment of Kevin Warsh as the 17th Fed chair, who pledged a reform‑oriented central bank and began his first FOMC meeting on June 17 without forward guidance.
Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed virtually unchanged on June 26, slipping 0.09% to 51,876 points. Traders cited the heightened rate‑hike expectations and ongoing Fed communications as the primary drivers of the modest decline, reflecting cautious optimism among investors as they await upcoming earnings reports and labor market data.
