Federal Reserve maintains focus on US inflation concerns
Inflation remains the primary concern for the Federal Reserve, according to Chicago Fed President Austin Goolsbee. Despite some recent cooling, Goolsbee noted that several months of mild data do not necessarily mean the crisis is over, warning that underlying inflationary pressures could prove resilient.
Inflation stood at 3.7% in July, significantly above the Fed's 2% target. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh described these price levels as ‘concerning’ during his speech at Jackson Hole. The resilience of the U.S. labor market and steady economic growth further limit the scope for rapid monetary policy easing.
Because the economy remains strong and consumption is robust, officials suggest that interest rates may need to remain at restrictive levels for an extended period. There is a risk that high inflation could become entrenched, which would require even stricter monetary tightening to reverse.
