Federal Reserve officials signal cautious approach to interest rates
Federal Reserve officials have provided insights into the future of US monetary policy, emphasizing a cautious approach to interest rate adjustments. Federal Reserve Vice Chair Philip Jefferson stated that there is no immediate urgency for a new interest rate move, suggesting the central bank needs more time to evaluate economic data and the balance of risks. Jefferson noted that while inflation remains above the 2% target, factors such as energy prices and geopolitical developments present upward risks to the inflation outlook.
Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari also addressed the inflation situation, indicating that additional interest rate hikes might be necessary if inflation remains resilient and economic growth stays unusually strong. Kashkari noted that the US economy has performed better than expected since the September meeting.
Market expectations, according to CME FedWatch, currently price in a 76.2% probability that policy rates will remain steady at 3.75%–4%, with a 23.8% chance of a 25 basis point increase.
