Federal Reserve officials signal potential for further interest rate hikes

Federal Reserve officials are weighing the possibility of further interest rate increases to combat inflation. John Williams, President of the New York Federal Reserve, indicated that an additional upward adjustment to the federal funds rate target range could be appropriate by the end of the year if economic conditions align with forecasts. However, he emphasized that there is no immediate rush to act following the 0.25 percentage point increase implemented in September.

Market analysts at Citigroup suggest that while markets are pricing in a greater than 50% chance of a rate hike at the upcoming October meeting, the core Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for September will be the decisive factor. Citigroup economist Andrew Hohenhorst noted that the Fed has become increasingly sensitive to current inflation data and energy prices. While upcoming labor market reports are being monitored, a milder reading in core inflation could potentially alter the current trajectory of expected rate hikes.
