Brazil launches SUS Command Center for intelligent ICUs

The Brazilian Ministry of Health has launched a Command Center for Intelligent Intensive Care Units (ICUs) within the Unified Health System (SUS). Based at the Hospital das Clínicas of the University of São Paulo (HC-FMUSP), the center provides 24-hour monitoring of vital signs for patients in 60 intelligent beds across six cities: Manaus, Recife, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, and Porto Alegre.

This technology utilizes artificial intelligence to enable predictive medicine, monitoring real-time data such as heart rate, oxygen levels, and blood pressure. The initiative aims to reduce clinical complications and hospitalization times, thereby increasing bed turnover and patient access.

In parallel, discussions regarding the implementation of federated computing are emerging as a way to advance AI within the SUS. This approach, exemplified by the ConvergeCore platform, would allow for the development and validation of AI models across different SUS units without the need to centralize sensitive patient medical records, maintaining data privacy and local institutional control.
