Bosnia and Herzegovina economic data shows rising living costs and wage gaps

Economic indicators in Bosnia and Herzegovina reveal a significant gap between wages and the cost of living. According to the Alliance of Independent Trade Unions of BiH, the union consumer basket for a four-member family in the Federation of BiH reached 3,565.70 KM in September 2026. The average net salary of 1,708 KM covered only 47.90% of these costs, while the minimum wage of 1,027 KM covered just 28.81%.

Food remains the largest expenditure, accounting for 46.12% of the consumer basket. Other major costs include housing and utilities (12.63%) and education and culture (12.62%). In the Republika Srpska, research indicates that 94.15% of workers believe a monthly salary of at least 2,000 KM is necessary for a dignified life, yet 83.66% earn less than that amount.

Additionally, the real estate market in BiH is seeing a steady increase, with experts projecting annual growth of 3% to 7%. Fuel prices in the Federation of BiH also show regional variation, with diesel prices ranging from 3.52 KM in Konjic to 3.95 KM in Livno. Brent crude oil prices have recently exceeded $110 per barrel, contributing to global market pressures.
