Federico Basile Re‑elected Mayor of Messina with Over 55% in First Round

Former mayor Federico Basile, who resigned in February 2026, won the Messina municipal election on the first ballot, securing roughly 55.7% of the vote. Voter turnout rose to 61.93%, with 116,772 of the 188,540 eligible voters casting ballots. Basile’s main challenger, centre‑right candidate Marcello Scurria, finished second, while centre‑left contender Antonella Russo placed third.

Regional deputy Pippo Lombardo of Sud chiama Nord praised the result, noting that “Il 55 % è un dato elevato” and that the outcome rewards “il lavoro fatto e la continuità” of Basile’s administration. He added that the strong mandate increases Basile’s responsibility to deliver on the city’s programmes.

The election data, confirmed by exit polls and official counts, indicate a clear preference for Basile’s continuity over the opposition’s campaign, which Lombardo described as focusing on “polemic” rather than policy.
