FedEx and UPS begin issuing tariff refunds to consumers

Major shipping companies, including FedEx and UPS, have begun issuing tariff refunds to customers following a Supreme Court ruling that struck down sweeping tariffs implemented in March 2025. The court ordered the U.S. government to return collected tariffs that were originally imposed under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

Approximately $100 billion in tariffs have been refunded to companies through a system managed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. While the Tax Foundation noted that the 2025 tariffs resulted in an average tax increase of $1,000 per U.S. household, consumers may receive direct portions of these funds via credit card or bank account transfers from their shippers.

FedEx has started issuing $800 million in refunds. Customers can check their eligibility by entering tracking numbers into a portal on the FedEx website. UPS, which paid $5 billion in tariffs on behalf of clients, is also involved in the refund process, with payments being rolled out in phases based on original payment dates.
