Wet cat food helps prevent renal disease through hydration

Wet cat food serves as an effective tool for increasing water intake and preventing urinary tract issues in domestic cats. Because cats descended from ancestors in arid environments, they evolved to obtain most of their hydration directly from prey rather than drinking large amounts of water voluntarily.

While traditional dry kibble typically contains only 6% to 10% moisture, wet food options can contain between 70% and 80% water. This high moisture content helps dilute urine, which reduces the risk of forming crystals and stones in the urinary tract. Additionally, the soft texture of wet food can assist older cats or those with chewing difficulties.

Veterinarians note that incorporating wet food into a routine is a strategic way to manage hydration, especially since cats often have a low thirst drive. Experts also suggest that hydration can be further supported by providing multiple water sources throughout the home.
