Feline chronic kidney disease and hydration management

Overview

Chronic kidney disease is a common health issue in cats, especially older animals, often characterized by gradual symptom onset such as increased thirst, weight loss, and muscle loss. Advanced stages may involve nausea, vomiting, or anemia. Diagnosis can be complicated by conditions like hyperthyroidism and high blood pressure.

To manage hydration and prevent renal and urinary tract issues, veterinarians suggest using wet cat food. Because cats evolved to obtain moisture from prey, they often have a low thirst drive. Wet food, which contains between 70% and 80% water, helps dilute urine to reduce the risk of crystals and stones, whereas traditional dry kibble typically contains only 6% to 10% moisture.
