Female bodybuilders face high risk of sudden cardiac death
Researchers from the University of Padua have identified a significantly high risk of sudden cardiac death among professional female bodybuilders. A study published in the European Heart Journal (EHJ) analyzed medical data from approximately 9,500 women who competed in international bodybuilding competitions between 2005 and 2020.
The study identified 32 deaths, nearly one-third of which were due to sudden cardiac arrest. The risk of death from heart disease was found to be more than 20 times higher in professional bodybuilders compared to amateur athletes. Dr. Marco Vacciato, the lead author, attributed this increased risk to intense physical activity, chronic dehydration, strict diets, and the use of stimulants, which place substantial stress on the cardiovascular system.
Additionally, the study highlighted mental health concerns, noting that 13 percent of deaths among female bodybuilders were attributed to suicide or violence, a rate four times higher than that of male athletes. Researchers are calling for increased medical supervision and regular cardiac screenings for these athletes, including younger individuals, to mitigate these risks.
