Femern Bælt Tunnel reaches 900-meter milestone

The Femern Bælt Tunnel project has reached a new milestone, with the immersion of the fourth tunnel element bringing the total length of the submerged section to nearly 900 meters. Each element measures 217 meters in length and weighs 73,500 tons. These components are transported from the tunnel factory in Rødbyhavn to the immersion site south of Lolland using tugboats and the specialized vessel IVY.

The fourth element has been named ‘Nykøbing Falster’ to honor the local town’s historical and future importance to the region. This specific element is the first of the project’s special components, which are roughly the size of a four-story building and will be placed approximately every two kilometers. These special elements will house technical installations and service parking areas.

The 18-kilometer long immersed tunnel is designed to connect Lolland, Denmark, with Germany. Construction continues at the Rødbyhavn factory, where 18 standard elements and three special elements have been cast to date.
