Fehmarnbelt Tunnel construction and delays

Overview

The Fehmarnbelt Tunnel project, an 18-kilometer immersed tunnel connecting Denmark and Germany, is currently undergoing construction. The project operator, Femern A/S, has reported that the projected opening date has shifted from 2029 to 2031 due to delays involving the tunnel itself and necessary rail hinterland connections on the German side. To mitigate these delays, officials are considering a phased opening where the road tunnel opens first, followed by the rail connection.

Despite these scheduling shifts, construction milestones continue. The project recently reached a point where nearly 900 meters of the tunnel section have been submerged. This was achieved following the immersion of the fourth tunnel element, named ‘Nykøbing Falster’. This element is one of several special components designed to house technical installations and service parking areas. Standard elements are being cast at the Rødbyhavn factory for transport to the immersion site south of Lolland.
