Fenerbahçe supporter Gerçek Yaşar laid to rest after fatal heart attack during derby

A Fenerbahçe supporter and veteran, Gerçek Yaşar, was laid to rest in Mersin's Mut district following a fatal heart attack during the Fenerbahçe-Beşiktaş derby. Yaşar, 48, had traveled to Istanbul to attend the match with his 16-year-old son, Gazi, marking the boy's first time watching a match from the stands.

Fenerbahçe board member Barış Karagöz attended the military funeral and announced that the club would support Yaşar's surviving children. Yaşar had previously earned his veteran status in 2003 while serving as a gendarmerie second lieutenant in Bingöl.

Beyond the tragedy, the derby served as a platform for the Ministry of Family and Social Services to promote its upcoming 'İyilik Var' (There is Goodness) volunteering platform. The initiative, launching September 12, uses symbolic objects like a giant book, guitar, and teddy bear to encourage citizens to contribute their time, skills, and expertise to social causes rather than just financial donations.
