Fermo hosts ceremony for Italian Military Internees

In Fermo, Italy, a ceremony was held at the San Filippo Neri Auditorium to observe the Day of the Italian Military Internees (IMI). During the event, six Medals of Honor, conferred by President Sergio Mattarella, were presented to the families of Italian military personnel and civilians who were deported or interned in Nazi camps following the armistice of September 8, 1943.

The medals were awarded in honor of Quinto Ferretti, Stefano Ferretti, Solitario Mariani, Luigi Muzi, Pasquale Pistolesi, and Domenico Sciancalepore. The ceremony was attended by local civil and military authorities, including Prefect Edoardo D’Alascio, Mayor Alberto Maria Scarfini, and Provincial President Michele Ortenzi, alongside numerous high school students.

The event served as a moment of reflection on the hardships faced by those forced into labor for the Third Reich, including extreme hunger and isolation. Testimonies, such as that from Ernesto Detto, son of internee Giovanni Detto, were shared to maintain historical memory and connect younger generations with the values of freedom and dignity.
