Italian commemorations of WWII Nazi-fascist victims
Overview
Local municipalities and organizations across Italy continue to conduct ceremonies to commemorate victims of Nazi-fascist actions and military personnel deported to concentration camps during World War II. These observances honor the National Day of the Italian Military Internees (IMI), established by Law No. 6 on January 13, 2025, to recognize the approximately 600,000 to 650,000 soldiers and civilians who refused to collaborate with Nazi-fascist forces following the September 8, 1943 armistice.
In Pisa, ceremonies at the Prefecture have honored the families of citizens deported to Nazi concentration camps. Medals of Honor, granted by the President of the Republic, were presented to the descendants of several individuals. Prefect Maria Luisa D'Alessandro noted that these individuals faced the choice to refuse collaboration, while the Mayor of Santa Croce sull'Arno, Roberto Giannoni, highlighted the estimated 60,000 deaths resulting from harsh labor camp conditions.
Posthumous Medaglia d’Onore (Medal of Honor) awards have been issued in several locations. In Viterbo, the medal was awarded to the memory of Lieutenant Mario Ciaccio of the 42nd Infantry Regiment, who chose imprisonment over collaboration after being captured in Greece. In Sassari, the honor was awarded to Gavino Mura, a member of the Guardia di Finanza deported to Austrian concentration camps.
In Fermo, a ceremony at the San Filippo Neri Auditorium honored the families of Quinto Ferretti, Stefano Ferretti, Solitario Mariani, Luigi Muzi, Pasquale Pistolesi, and Domenico Sciancalepore. Attended by local authorities and students, the event included testimonies, such as from Ernesto Detto, to maintain historical memory regarding the hunger and isolation faced by those forced into labor for the Third Reich.
