Mexican artist identified as victim in Spain high-speed train crash

Spanish authorities have identified Fernando Calvillo, a 45-year-old Mexican artist and educator, as the individual who had been missing since the high-speed train collision in Toledo on October 28. The accident occurred on the Madrid-Seville line when a Renfe AVE train struck a stationary Iryo convoy near Urda.

Calvillo, originally from Aguascalientes and a resident of Oklahoma City, was among 12 Mexican nationals involved in the incident. While 11 others were treated for minor injuries and discharged, Calvillo’s death was confirmed by the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE).

The SRE is currently coordinating with Spanish authorities, including the Civil Guard, to assist Calvillo’s family with funeral arrangements and the repatriation of his remains. Calvillo was a prominent figure in the arts, having worked as a professor and as the Director of Community Relations for the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition.
