Spain high-speed train collision
Overview
A high-speed train collision occurred near Urda, Spain, on the Madrid-Seville line when a Renfe AVE train struck a stationary Iryo convoy. The accident resulted in at least 69 deaths.
Initially, Fernando Calvillo, a prominent Oklahoma City artist and educator with dual US and Mexican citizenship, was reported missing following the crash. While his husband was treated for serious injuries, search efforts for Calvillo focused on a brief signal detected from his Apple Watch at the site.
Spanish authorities and the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs later confirmed Calvillo’s death. He was identified as one of 12 Mexican nationals involved in the incident. The Mexican government is currently coordinating with Spanish authorities to assist his family with repatriation and funeral arrangements.
