Fernando Haddad officially named São Paulo governor candidate
Former finance minister Fernando Haddad was officially confirmed as the Workers' Party (PT) candidate for governor of São Paulo at a state convention on 25 May. The event in Campinas' Arena Concórdia was attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Vice‑President Geraldo Alckmin, who praised Haddad’s experience and urged unity behind the ticket. Former governor Márcio França was nominated as Haddad’s running mate, while Senate candidates Simone Tebet and Marina Silva were also presented.
During his speech Haddad sharply criticized incumbent Governor Tarcísio de Freitas and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, defended Brazil’s electronic voting system and warned against foreign interference in the upcoming elections. Lula and Alckmin echoed calls for democratic strengthening, marking the start of the PT’s campaign for the October state elections.
