São Paulo 2026: PT campaign intensifies, Tarcísio criticized
Overview
Fernando Haddad’s PT offensive in São Paulo has moved from a security‑focused rollout to a broader challenge of Governor Tarcísio de Freitas’ administration. After unveiling a three‑layer public‑security plan in late July – including AI tools, body‑cameras and a focus on organized‑crime “upper tiers” – Haddad and PT legislators intensified criticism of the governor’s policies.
On 22 July PT councilwoman Luna Zarattini labelled the state’s education system a “complete disaster,” citing school infrastructure failures, teacher illness and a “dismantling” of the sector. She also attacked recent privatizations, notably the water utility Sabesp, metropolitan rail and metro concessions, and linked low police salaries to broader governance problems. Haddad added that the newly privatized CPTM train lines had suffered power outages and a fire, urging a review of the contracts.
Two days later Haddad formally launched his gubernatorial pre‑campaign in Campinas, adopting the slogan “Desperta SP.” The event highlighted outreach to the interior and agribusiness, and reiterated concerns over public security, homelessness, Sabesp’s privatization and the CPTM Line 12 explosion, framing these issues as central to the 2026 election.
