Fernpass blockade sparks traffic jams for German holiday travelers

On Saturday, 1 August, protesters in Tirol blocked the Fernpass between 10:00 and 12:00, shutting the route at two points near Reutte and Nassereith. The demonstration targets planned tunnel projects, tolls and rising traffic on the Alpine corridor.

German police and the ADAC warned that the closure will create severe congestion on the north‑south link to Austria and Italy, prompting travelers from Bavaria and Baden‑Württemberg to postpone trips, use alternative routes or travel outside the blockage window. Police spokesperson Johannes Stoll advised drivers to avoid non‑essential trips toward Tirol and to consider passing the pass either early in the morning or after noon. The earlier June blockade caused little disruption, but authorities expect much heavier delays this time because the day coincides with the start of summer holidays in Germany.
