German holiday traffic hit by road works and Alpine Fernpass closure

A protest by residents blocked the Fernpass mountain pass in Tirol, Austria, at the start of the German summer holidays. Despite the closure, traffic from Germany to the south remained largely fluid, with only modest delays of 50–60 minutes reported on the Munich–Salzburg and Tauern routes.

In Bavaria, the start of the holidays in Baden‑Württemberg and Bavaria generated extensive traffic, with the ADAC measuring about 600 km of congestion on German autobahns during the peak hour. Major bottlenecks were reported on the A7 between Würzburg, Ulm and Füssen and on the A8 Munich–Salzburg, largely caused by construction sites and narrowed lanes.

Across Germany, numerous road works are in effect: Ludwigsburg faces multiple street closures and lane reductions; Berlin’s eastern districts see new construction on Rhinstraße, Greifswalder Allee and other arteries, while the Ringbahn is suspended for a week. In Neuburg, the central Luitpoldstraße is partially closed for resurfacing.

The Auto Club Europe (ACE) forecasts that the weekend of 7‑9 August will see widespread congestion on German autobahns, with roughly 1 000 construction sites contributing to long queues on both outbound and return journeys. The ADAC expects “stau, wohin das Auge reicht” as holiday traffic reaches its limit.
